Former Musician Dies at 81

Joseph C. Smith, 81, of 1048 Alton Rd., Miami Beach, a retired orchestra leader, died Monday.

Mr. Smith was an orchestra leader during the 1920's [sic] and was the leader of the first band to record dance music for RCA Victor records. He was an honor member of Associated Musicians of Greater New York. He moved to Miami 20 years ago from New York.

Sole survivor is his wife, Margaret.

A requiem mass will be observed 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Walsh and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

J. C. Smith, Led Dance Orchestra

Joseph C. Smith, leader of the first band to record dance music for RCA Victor, died here yesterday at 81.

Mr. Smith came here 20 years ago from New York City and lived at 1048 Alton Road, Miami Beach.

Sole survivor is his wife, Margaret.

Requiem mass will be 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Walsh and Wood Funeral Home is in charge.
